Off-Roading

One day I am going to run out of driving puns to use as titles.

Today is not that day.

Lil and I decided that the sun was calling and we took our lessons to Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa, Florida.

My dad used to take us camping there years ago, I have not returned in decades. I forgot how beautiful and massive it is. They had a lot of damage and flooding last year with the hurricanes that hit Florida and they are still recovering. Showing Lil the watermarks on some of the trees put it in perspective for her that storms can be dangerous.

But that day was clear, and surprisingly breezy. We parked in Lot P3 and walked to the playground, which was still damaged. We meandered down the path to the suspension bridge and then walked along the trail by the river. In the shade, we could even pretend that it really was Autumn in Florida. There is a canoe launch as well as a place to rent bikes. And the weekday that we visited, very minimal crowds.

We talked about wildlife, early settlements, and then I took her to the exhibit on the Second Seminole War. It’s a small museum, but it has some interesting artifacts and displays.

The park does have a really cool candlelit event coming up in December. If you are in central Florida, I highly recommend checking it out.
