It seems that everyone has an opinion on homeschool methods and curricula.
And I don’t think that anyone shares their opinions maliciously. If it worked for them, I appreciate the feedback.
But it can get overwhelming.
Do you unschool and let the feral child run loose? Classical? Charlotte Mason? Montessori? Eclectic?
It seems like everyone has a preference.
So, on a ladies trip to the beach, when I was supposed to be taking a nap, I hopped online and picked a few different workbooks and called it a day. To be fair, this is Lil’s year of preschool so she has a curriculum there. I love her school, it’s a small Christian daycare attached to a private school that’s walking distance from our house. The teachers are great and the admins are super helpful.
However, she will be five this week. And she is very advanced, she went into daycare two years ago able to count and knowing the alphabet. Sometimes I just look at her in awe because she has this fantastic memory and connects all these dots. She is way smarter than I am. And she has this innate sense of right and wrong. If she loves you, she will always look out for you. Her heart hurts when she thinks of homeless dogs at the shelter or people who have lost their homes in a hurricane. Smart and thoughtful.
So my goal was to help her learn at her own pace, which is a little faster than average. Wherever her she is right now, that’s where I will meet her. Because as her parent, it’s my job to support her.
Long story not-so-short, I selected a kindergarten science program with additional practice worksheets, a kindergarten math workbook, and a Biblical Greek program. I decided to hold off on Greek until she gets a better grasp on handwriting in English, but the rest of it has been well-used in the past few weeks.
We have also had a few wonderful field trips and crafts too.
Her supply list was very similar to the kindergarten lists I have seen online
Construction paper
Handwriting paper
Pencils
Crayons
Colored pencils
Blunt-tipped kid sized scissors
Washable glue
Dry erase board and markers
Lap desk
But her favorite so far has been the kitchen. She has been my helper a handful of times when making dinner, but it’s usually just easier and faster to do it myself. My previous weekday schedule was hectic and chaotic and just didn’t have enough hours in it to do everything I needed to do. But since reducing the hours I spend working, I have more free time to cook from scratch. And more patience to let her do more. She is an excellent cookie taste tester.
What do you think? Should I post our favorite recipes next week?
